Been referred on and waiting for specialist care? We stay with you every step of the way. Clinician-guided support keeps you connected between referral and treatment, so there are no gaps in your care.
What is it
If you have been referred to a specialist service outside of our offering and there is a wait before your first appointment, laya healthcare stays with you throughout. Interim Support is structured, clinician-guided support designed to provide stability, coping tools and reassurance so that you are never left without support between steps. This is not a replacement for specialist care, it is your bridge to it.
Who is it for
Members and children over 16 who have been referred to a specialist or external service that can better support their needs - for example, where a condition requires longer-term or higher-intensity care than we are able to provide directly, such as inpatient services, specialist psychiatry or complex risk support. If this applies to you, your clinician will explain clearly why an external referral is the right next step and what happens from there.
How to access
Offered as part of your care pathway. Your clinician will set this up with you - you do not need to request it separately.
Cost
Included in your membership. No additional cost.
What's included
Regular clinician-guided contact throughout your wait
Structured coping tools and evidence-based resources
Clarity on what happens next and when
Risk monitoring and safety planning where needed
No member is left without clinical contact between referral and treatment

During your first conversation, you will speak with a qualified clinician who will take the time to understand your needs and recommend the support that is right for you. No GP referral is required.
-
Your first call is an opportunity to talk about what is going on for you. Take your time - your first conversation is unhurried and lasts on average 45 minutes.
A qualified clinician will listen in confidence and complete an assessment to identify the most appropriate support for your situation. In-the-moment support begins immediately with the clinician you are speaking with. In some cases, you may also be referred to an additional service that matches your needs, either within our service or externally, with clear guidance from your clinician.
You do not need to know what kind of help you need before you call. That is exactly what the first call is for.
-
Many services are included at no additional cost, including:
24/7 in the moment support
Short-term counselling, including couples counselling* available for members and children aged 16+
LiCBT (Low Intensity CBT) - structured, evidence-based programmes for presentations including anxiety, panic, OCD and insomnia, delivered by registered practitioners*

Digital, self-paced wellbeing programmes
Interim Support: While You Wait*

To access more specialised care, like Digital Therapy (Digital Psychology and Digital Psychotherapy for adults and children aged 6+ where clinically appropriate), costs will apply to you as the member, subject to claiming back on your outpatient benefit. Check your Member Area at layahealthcare.ie for what is covered under your specific plan.
-
You do not need to decide this yourself. Our clinical team will assess your needs during your first call and guide you towards the most appropriate support. This ensures you receive the right care at the right time, matched to your individual situation.
-
Sometimes a member's needs may be better suited to another type of support, such as a structured CBT programme, digital psychotherapy, digital psychology or a specialist service.
If this happens, our team will explain the options available and help you understand any costs that may apply.
For example, where clinical guidelines recommend a structured approach for presentations like anxiety, panic, OCD or insomnia, your clinician may recommend LiCBT (Low Intensity CBT) rather than counselling. This is not a lesser service - it is the most evidence-based option for your specific needs. Your clinician will always discuss this with you and your preference will always be considered.
