Neutral Thinking
In today’s society we’re often told to be positive as a way to deal with life’s stresses. But, as we’ve all found out – telling somebody or being told just to ‘be positive’ when things go wrong often doesn’t land well. One reason being that a person doesn’t feel their feelings or opinions are being listened to when this happens, and they go on the defensive instead.
Going neutral is often a better approach. Think of the gear stick in a manual transmission car – if you want to go from a low gear to a high gear you have to go through neutral first. Think of it as reality-based or objective thinking. Thinking neutral can help you to keep things in perspective, removing judgement and lessening emotions and thus allow you take action in your current situation.
